Review

This lodge is part of the Uganda Exclusive Camp portfolio and it is one of our favourites! The lodge is set up on an elevated platform so it gives you a sense of being up-high in the forest and part of the national park. The lodge has a real sense of intimacy and ‘safari-feel’ to it, with a warm fire-pit and an indoor fire by the inviting bar area.

Location

The lodge sits just a short walk from the park headquarters in Bwindi National Park. This ancient forest in Uganda’s mountainous south has a wealth of biodiversity, with 350 recorded birds, 310 butterflies, 200 trees, 51 reptiles and 120 mammals, including the rare and unforgettable mountain gorilla. We would recommend doing at least one gorilla trek, but two would be preferable, and you won’t regret it!

Layout

Buhoma Lodge is all set on raised wooden platforms so to get between the main area and your room, you walk across wooden platforms and a lot of stairs! The main area is open-plan, with a lounge area, a cosy indoor hanging fire place and a dining area for breakfast and dinner. The 10 rooms are set back from the main area and are all elevated higher, to offer the best views.

Rooms

The lodge has 10 comfortable chalets which have been built from locally sourced materials without compromising levels of comfort. Each chalet is eco-friendly, with solar lighting and rain showers. Some chalets also offer a bath-tub for relaxation and enjoyment after the day’s activities. Each chalet has an outdoor veranda with comfortable chairs.

Activities

Gorilla tracking is the main activity to do in Bwindi National Park. You will need to book this before your trip in order to secure the gorilla permits (which are currently $600 per person per trek). The length of each trek is completely determined on the location of the gorilla family you will be trekking to see. Some treks may be an hour, some may take up to four or five hours, but the chances of seeing gorillas is almost 100 percent.

Authentic and ‘safari chic’, great property
