Review

Kyanginga Lodge is sat on the edge of an extinct volcanic crater lake looking out to the Rwenzori Mountains in south-western Uganda. The lodge sits high up with beautiful views offered from the main area and your private veranda on your bedroom, but with the high altitude, expect a lot of stairs! The lodge is independently run and offers a cosy and intimate feel, especially at night with the roaring fire in the lounge.

Location

The lodge is a base for those booked on to do chimpanzee trekking in Kibale Forest. The forest itself has the highest density of chimpanzees in the world, as well as being home to 13 other rare primate species. The Kyaninga area has twinned-volcanic crater lakes which you can explore and walk around. On the walk down, explore the local villages and see Ugandan life at its most authentic.

Layout

As mentioned, there is a lot of stairs in this lodge! The main area leads out to a large wooden veranda which has a beautiful view out to the crater lakes and the magical Rwenzori Mountains. Inside, the main area has a cosy lounge with a roaring fire and of books and games available, and on the other side, a small dining area for your meals. The rooms are allocated to one side of the main area, and are spread along a tall wooden walkway. Please note there are a lot of stairs in this lodge so it is not ideal for those with any walking issues.

Rooms

The rooms at Kyangina Lodge are very spacious with a large bed, a seating area, a well-appointed ensuite bathroom and a veranda overlooking the mountains. They are large enough to fit an extra bed or person in if you needed to make it a triple.

Activities

The main attraction is the chimpanzee trekking in Kibale Forest and from a logistics point of view, you will need to have breakfast in the lodge and then leave with your guide at around 7am. You can also explore the Rwenzori Mountains and take a guided walk around the lakes, villages or up to the escarpment of the Great Rift Valley.
