Old Mondoro Camp

By far the Lower Zambezi’s most intimate and exclusive camp! A rustic favourite!

Review

Owned and run by the Cumings family (who also run Chiawa Camp further to the west), this small and intimate camp is one of our favourites in all of the Lower Zambezi, and possibly Zambia! With only four safari chalets and a very authentic, wild and natural feel to their design and layout, Old Mondoro really do focus their energy on the guiding, experience and the wildlife. There is never a day when wildlife (be it elephants, antelope, bushbuck, lion) does not walk through camp or make an appearance!

Location

Old Mondoro is located in the eastern section of the Lower Zambezi National Park. This area is shared with only two other camps (Anabezi and Amanzi), so the game activities are private and exclusive to some degree. This area of the park is very different to the western section of the park (where its sister camp, Chiawa, is located). This area has vast thorntree forests which are just stunning!

Layout

Old Mondoro can have up to eight guests which means that the experience is always private and exclusive. The camp is very different to other camps in the Lower Zambezi as the rooms are situated further back from the river. This may seem crazy (as the Lower Zambezi National Park is centered around the river), but the rooms have a 360-degree view overlooking a lagoon which is always an animal haven and a grove of Acacia trees.

Rooms

The camp has many photographs of guests in their room, or in their open-air bath, with elephants passing them in front. This is a regular (in fact, daily), occurrence in camp and this is because the rooms are so open and natural, allowing them to blend in with the natural environment. The rooms are made from reed and canvas and during the day, the canvas can be rolled up to create a sense of ‘living in the bush’.

Activities

Old Mondoro has an exceptional team of staff and safari guides who have boundless enthusiasm. Walking safaris, game drives (day and night), canoeing, fishing and boat safaris are offered. The game in this area is fantastic, with resident lion prides, high leopard populations and of course, huge families of elephant that pass-through camp regularly.
