Review

As the closest camp to the Mfuwe Gate outside of the South Luangwa National Park, Flatdogs Camp is not only conveniently placed, but also one of the favourite camps for those on a lower budget. It homes a range of accommodation to suit all, from classic canvassed tents to treehouses built between African ebony trees.

Location

Flatdogs Camp sits just outside of the South Luangwa National Park and is sat on the banks of the mighty Luangwa River. The river erodes the course of the soft soil on the Valley floor, leaving ox-bow lagoons which are a haven for the wildlife in the dry season as they retain water. South Luangwa homes an exceptional amount of wildlife, with the big predators regularly seen… even on foot!

Layout

The camp’s variety of accommodation (safari tents, stone chalets and a tree-house) are well spaced, circling the main bar and restaurant area. The main area is set back from the bank of the Luangwa River, which is home to many crocodiles, hippo and sometimes elephant crossing! The bar area is open-plan, with plenty of comfortable sofas and seating, to create a laid-back atmosphere.

Rooms

There is a range of accommodation to choose from in Flatdogs Camp, including chalet rooms, luxury safari tents and even a jackalberry tree-houses. The canvassed tents are simple and comfortable, with open air en-suite bathrooms that feature hot showers, flushing toilets and wash basins. For those looking for a more permanent structure, there are six two-storey chalet rooms which are made of stone which are designed to keep you cool during your stay. The jackalberry tree-house is built around three live African abony trees and views from the tree-house boast unspoilt views across the lagoon with regular resident wildlife!

Activities

Flatdogs Camp is the closest camp to the main gate called Mfuwe, so the safari can begin almost immediately! Activities from camp include game drives (day and night), and walking safaris, both conducted with professional guides. Walking safaris from the camp, and South Luangwa in general, are renowned to be the best in all of Africa! The guides describe exceptional detail and knowledge about the park ecology and wildlife, from the quietest of animal calls and the smallest of footprint or spotting technique… which all makes it very exciting!
