Review

Nkwali Lodge is sat on the banks of the Luangwa River, on private land owned and run by Robin Pope Safaris. Its position, outside of the parks boundaries, means that exclusivity and privacy are combined with excellent game viewing… the perfect combination for those looking for seclusion!

Location

Nkwali Camp is sat just outside of the South Luangwa’s National Park, in the game management area which sits on private land owned by the Robin Pope Portfolio. As a result, the camp and its guests benefit from seclusion and privacy, along with exclusive access into the park by boat or pontoon when the water levels get lower. There is resident game on the game management side and prides of lion sometimes cross over to this side of the river, so Nkwali gets the best of both worlds.

Layout

The camp homes six spacious chalets, each with a view of the mighty Luangwa River. A large ebony tree is the main feature when walking into the bar and lounge area… It is immediately striking and truly makes you feel you are in the bush. Further back from the bank of the river is the swimming pool which overlooks a small lagoon, home to the resident hippo named Humphrey!

Rooms

The six chalets at Nkewli Camp are completely open during the day, which offers views directly out onto the Luangwa. At night, the gated doors are pulled together to make the room cosy and safe. The chalets all have very large en-suites, with twin sinks, flushing toilets and an open-air large shower. The honeymoon chalet is much larger, with an extended lounge area inside the room with a comfortable sofa looking out onto the river.

Activities

As Nkwali Camp sits on its own area of private land, the game drives in this area are exclusive. Getting into South Luangwa National Park is easy as a boat or a pontoon will get you direct access into the park. Inside the park, activities include game drives (day and night) and walking safaris, led by a knowledge guide a National Park scout. Nkweli Camp also offers village tours, wildlife education centre visits and tribal textile visits.
