Review

Classified as a ‘classic plus’ camp by Wilderness Safaris, Kwetsani is certainly not a huge step down in luxury from the flagship camp in the concession, Jao, but is a step down in price and so, for us, offers very good value for a very luxurious camp. Overlooking the famous Jao floodplains, this small tented camp is everything you would expect from a Wilderness operated camp, stunning views, sumptuous food and exceptional service. All in all, right up there with the best camps in and around the delta.

Location

Situated in the very picturesque Jao Concession, to the north west of the delta, Kwetsani looks out across the Jao floodplain and is a short boat/drive from Hunda Island which, as the floods come through this section of the delta, becomes a mecca for the wildlife of the area. It is true that the Jao Concession is one of the busier concessions in the delta with (arguably) 6 properties in it but, due to the careful management of vehicles and the spread out nature of the area, is rarely noticeable. Kwetsani is one of the first properties in the delta to get the early flood waters in late April.

Layout

Each of the 5 vast tents is well spaced out on either side of the main lounge and dining areas. They all feature open vistas out across the floodplains where game is regularly sighted and are connected with a series of raised wooden walkways that float above the island’s leafy floor. The main dining and lounge areas also feature stunning views out from the decked platform which drops down to the swimming pool that is situation out at the front of the camp and makes you feel like you are swimming in the Okavango!

Rooms

The rooms, as mentioned, are vast with a full sleeping area, indoor lounge areas and decked seating area at the front. While they are, strictly speaking, canvas tents, this is not ‘camping’ by any means and we would definitely put Kwetsani up there with the more luxurious camps in Botswana.

Activities

Being located right on the floodplain but also a short boat ride away from one of the largest islands in the concession allows Kwetsani to offer the full range of delta activities including mokoros, speedboats, game driving, night driving and, when the waters permit, they can also offer walking activities. (please note that, in order to access Hunda Island, the camp needs to check with the other camps in the area as there is a limit to the number of vehicles allowed on the island at any one time)
