Sabuk Lodge

Location

In Western Laikipia, Sabuk Lodge is situated above the Ewaso Nyiro River. Perched on a 50 metre gorge, the lodge and all of the rooms have a direct view of the flowing river and small rapids. The area has relatively low density game, hence Sabuk have a range of activities that offer alternatives.

Layout

The main lodge has a grand entrance with a high stone ceiling and an open walkway onto the wooden verandah. The lounge is very cosy with a number of sofas, cushions, little library and hammocks calling your name after a fun-filled day. Under the same high ceiling is the communal dining area, where a huge fig table features... perfect for sharing bush stories and meeting new people. From the main lodge and the small shop, the rooms are generously spread along a stony pathway in a line.

Rooms

Sabuk has six en-suite stone and thatched cottages and Eagle Cottage that has two rooms, ideally for families. The Sabuk cottages are all slightly different but have the same natural design as they are all partially open to the wilderness (the family cottage has a safety netting). There is a centrepiece open air bath in each of the rooms with views across the gorge.

Activities

Activities include game drives, both day and night, walking safaris, hiking, camel safaris, fishing and river swimming. Because of the low density of game, the focus of Sabuk is less about the intense wildlife viewing, and more to appreciate the setting of the river, the unique landscape and trying new or alternative activities. For example, fly camping in a remote setting of Laikipia is very popular, accompanied by a professional guide and camels.
