Review

Run by the Fox family, Rufiji River Camp was one of the first camps established in the park and its reputation has only grown and grown over the last few years! Set on the banks of the Rufiji River, the camp is made of 14 tents and suites, each pitched undernearth thatched roofs and boasting views of the mighty river. Great guiding, great location, great game and most of all, great value for money!

Location

The camp is set on the eastern side of the Selous and as it sits up on the elevated banks of the Rufiji River, the camp benefits from beautiful and exclusive views out to the mighty river which dominates the Selous.

Layout

The camp has been redesigned to complement its location on a promontory in the river bank. With 14 en-suite tents (11 standard tents and 3 suites), although Rufiji River Camp is larger than most of the intimate tented camps in the Selous, the rooms are spaced out well across the banks of the river and the communal areas – the dining area, lounge and swimming pool, are all very spacious.

Rooms

The canvassed tents themselves are sat on a raised platform of hard wood flooring, and pitched under a Makuti palm roof. This gives the room a little more of a structure than just the canvassed tents, which appeals to some people! Each room has an appointed en-suite bathroom with solar powered showers and running water, as well as a huge private veranda which overlooks the Rufiji. The camp has 3 suites which are perfect for families as a shared walkway and private plunge pool connects two rooms.

Activities

Boating safaris are done in flat bottomed boats and are the perfect way to relax the serenity of the river, even as you pass pods of hippo and giant crocodile on the banks. Open-sided vehicles take guests out on half or full day game drives and are a great way to see the big animals. Game walks are for those looking for the smaller things… the footprints, the sounds, and the bug life… although never rule out seeing bigger game on foot which is a memorable experience.

Good for those looking for a bit more of a structure to canvassed tents

One of the larger camps with a total of 14 rooms
