Located over to the eastern edge of the main game viewing area, Selous Impala Camp is still privately owned and, especially in low season when it drops its rates and offers a 4th night for free, offers very good value for money. Impala has definitely grown to be one of our favourite properties over the last few years and, with the owner lead attention to detail, great guiding and accommodation, it is certainly our pick of the mid-priced properties in the park.

Location

Set to the east of the famed Siwandu region of the park, Impala is located on the outer edge of a bend in the Rufiji River which affords it sweeping views up and down the river. On the whole the game viewing in this area is very reliable and, being set slightly away from the main game viewing area allows it to feel a little more secluded than properties like Siwandu and Manze.

Layout

As with all of the properties in the Selous, Selous Impala Camp has made the most of its location along the banks of the Rufiji River with all of the 8 tents featuring views out across the river and seclusion from those around. With a good sized swimming pool and a great dining area and bar looking out over the river, it is a good way to send a few nights in the bush!

Rooms

The large tents that are used for the property have plenty of room inside and are set on their own decking, each with a verandah and views out over the Rufiji River. While these are standard canvas tents, they are well ventilated and have ensuite facilities that keep them cool and comfortable.

Activities

Selous Impala Camp is definitely one of the better properties for those that are wanting to concentrate on their safari experience with very experienced guides for walking, boating and game driving activities…all of which can be chosen on a daily basis if preferred.

Feedback

It’s difficult to overstate just how good this place was. Incredibly comfortable, great food and the people were it’s best asset. Our guide was exceptional. We went out 5 times and saw most things, and felt vindicated that we went to Selous rather than the Serengeti (for example) because we were alone for most of the time rather than crowded by other jeeps. Although it’s difficult to choose this was probably our favourite part of the trip. Being alone in a forest with a family of elephants is pretty unforgettable.

We particularly enjoyed our stay at the Impala Lodge. It is not a luxurious place, (no air conditioning or hair dryers because they use only solar power) but it is very comfortable and the service and food are 5 star! I particularly liked their attention to detail such as the fresh cloth hand towels in the public bathroom each day.

Another advantage of Impala is that the game is right there. You don't have to drive any distance to find animals. For example, one night coming back to our tent with our Masai guide we were greeted by a giraffe and we loved seeing the impala nestled in the grass near our porch! The Masai were always aware of the location of the resident hippo and I soon realized he was more interested in eating grass than caring about us!

The transfer to Impala was fine. The camp just that little bit more comfort than Lake Manze. Sylvia looked after me very well and even joined me for dinner for 3 of the nights (good for an old farts ego!).

Again the whole experience was superb. The sunset champagne stop on the boat safari was particularly nice, We had the same guide, Gerrard, all the time and there was nothing that he wouldn't do to make the experience memorable. As well as finding the dogs another two times we saw lion with cubs, lion on a kill, Colobus monkeys (quite difficult to find) and on the final morning the elusive Leopard.
